Refugees Northwest Asylum Assistance offered by Lutheran Community Services Northwest in SeaTac

Programs that develop plans for the evaluation, treatment and/or care of individuals who, because of age, illness, disability or other difficulties, need assistance in planning and arranging for services; which assess the individual's needs; coordinate the delivery of needed services; ensure that services are obtained in accordance with the case plan; and follow up and monitor progress to ensure that services are having a beneficial impact on the individual. Case management is a collaborative process characterized by communication, advocacy and resource management to promote high quality, cost-effective interventions and outcomes.

Case/Care Management

Programs that provide assistance for non-citizens who are having difficulty understanding, accessing, and/or are unaware of government-sponsored entitlement programs and social services for which they are eligible including housing programs, employment assistance and job training, medical assistance, and other government entitlements. The program may help these individuals understand the eligibility criteria for benefits and services, the benefits/services available, the payment process and the rights of beneficiaries; provide consultation and advice; help them complete application forms; negotiate on their behalf with benefits administration and social service staff; and/or represent them in administrative processes or judicial litigation. Included are benefits counseling organizations that offer a range of advocacy services and legal aid programs that offer more formalized legal assistance.

Immigrant Benefits Assistance

Programs that help people obtain, complete and/or file official forms, certificates, documents, applications or other paperwork that is required to apply for benefits or services, initiate or respond to legal action or to officially handle or document the occurrence of a transaction; that help people acquire copies of official documents on file elsewhere; or that review legal documentation an individual has received to help explain its meaning.

Certificates/Forms Assistance

Programs that assist in filing applications by lawful permanent residents who have been in that status for at least five years (or three years if married to a U.S. citizen), who meet other eligibility requirements and who wish to become naturalized U.S. citizens. Applicants must pass a citizenship examination to determine whether they can speak and read English and have a knowledge of the fundamentals of American government, history and the Constitution; and must take an oath of allegiance to the United States.

Naturalization Support/Legal Services

Programs that assist in filing petitions for asylee status in situations where the individuals are unwilling or unable to return to or avail themselves of the protection of their country of nationality or last residence because they have been persecuted or have a well-founded fear of persecution based on their race, religion, political opinion, membership in a particular social group, or nationality. Asylum applications must be filed within one year of admission to the United States and can be made after admission or at a port of entry. Asylees may apply for lawful permanent resident status after one year.

Asylum Application Filing Assistance

Programs that assist in filing petitions by refugees or asylees who are seeking to obtain derivative refugee status for their spouses and unmarried children younger than age 21. Petitions must be filed within two years of the arrival of the petitioner in the United States (i.e., within two years of gaining refugee or asylee status), and evidence substantiating spousal and/or family relationships must be filed. The spousal relationship must have existed prior to the petitioner's admission, and must currently exist. These programs may also assist in filing Affidavits of Relationship (AORs) by refugees, asylees, lawful permanent residents and citizens on behalf of family members who have fled their home country in cases where the country has been designated by the U.S. as a "refugee-eligible" country. Refugees, asylees and lawful permanent residents may file AORs for their spouses, parents, unmarried children of any age and orphaned nieces and nephews younger than age 21. Citizens may file for siblings and grandparents. AORs are processed by overseas Joint Voluntary Agencies or U.S. embassies and consulates. There is no time limit for filing an AOR.

Refugee/Asylee Relative Petition Filing Assistance

Programs that provide a wide variety of legal and supportive services (which may include information, counseling, application completion and filing assistance and/or legal representation, when required) for immigrants, nonimmigrant visa applicants, asylum seekers and lawful permanent residents who are seeking naturalization. Issues may include procedures for obtaining student, visitor and employment-based visas; family immigration; asylee status; lawful permanent residence status; and/or citizenship.

Comprehensive Immigration/Naturalization Services

Programs that assist in filing applications for aliens who wish to become lawful permanent residents. Certain aliens who have been inspected and admitted or paroled into the United States or who are refugees, asylees or persons holding nonimmigrant visas may have their status adjusted to that of lawful permanent residence if they are in lawful status, are eligible to receive an immigrant visa, and a visa is immediately available. Immigrant visas are immediately available for spouses, unmarried children younger than age 21, and parents of U.S. citizens. Some aliens not in lawful status may also be able to adjust their status under special rules set out in Immigration and Naturalization Act section 245(i).
