Provides transportation to covered medical services for Medicaid clients in Island, San Juan, Skagit and Whatcom Counties.
Provides transportation to covered medical services for Medicaid clients. Public transportation, such as the bus, must be used before other forms of transportation. If the bus cannot be taken for mobility reasons, or if bus service is not available in a client's area, helps with other transportation such as: Gas vouchers; van/taxi (may be grouped with others); group shuttle; ferry fares; intercity bus; wheelchair accessible vehicles; and air fare/water taxi (San Juan County).
After-hours transportation assistance
Provides rides home from the Emergency Room when the office is closed. Medical staff must contact (360) 733-8294. All other trips must be pre-arranged.

Does not qualify for services if:
- Going to/from a Medicaid appointment (Medicaid Beneficiaries may receive services to appts not covered by Medicaid - Chiropractor, Eyeglass, pet care, etc; or possibly if Medicaid rides have been denied or are not covered)
- Using a wheelchair (unless they fold and can be placed in the trunk and client can transfer themselves)
- Living in a Group Home
- Living in a Assisted Living Facility
- Living in a Care Facility
- Receiving COPES
- Has a paid Caregiver
- Client can use Transit, has own car, or lives with family member who has car.
**Exception: Volunteer Services can fill in if family has one car and family member works full time which doesn't allow for client to receive rides**
**Examples of Exceptions: client has temporary disability and cannot drive, or if client is at risk due to COVID, they can be considered “disabled” and not forced to take transit**

COVID-19 Vaccine: Volunteer Services provides rides to receive a Covid-19 Vaccine. Client must be going to an appointment at a vaccination site or a drive thru site. Volunteers drivers are able to wait in long lines or drive thru vaccination sites with the client. Volunteer Services will need the data and time of the appointment, the location, and if it is a drive thru or an appointment at a facility.
Medical Appointment: Volunteer Services provides rides to medical appointments, including Dental, Chiropractic, Physical Therapy, Eyeglass, etc. Any appointment that is not Medicaid covered. *Possible exceptions to Medicaid Appointments: Client denied Paratransit/not receiving any other transportation. Will need explanation notated.
Dialysis: Volunteer Services can serve as a supplemental transportation option for trips to and from dialysis. These trips will need prior notice to ensure driver availability.
Medical Appointments involving Sedation: Volunteer Services can provide a ride to a client who has been under sedation and is accompanied by an attendant. The attendant must take on the liability for the client and be the one to accompany the client to the appointment. Drivers are not allowed to attend an appointment or procedure with a client.
Picking up Prescriptions: Volunteer will take clients to pharmacies.
Grocery Shopping and Food Banks: Volunteers will take clients to grocery stores and food banks. Volunteers may provide contactless grocery shopping/food bank pick up if requested, but not guaranteed. Dependent upon driver availability. (Notate if clients are currently signed up and actively going to a particular food bank).
Pet Care Appointment: Animal in a carrier the whole time unless it’s a service animal.

***Everyone who qualifies for Volunteer Services is encouraged to apply in any case. Volunteer Services will be able to determine what they can do after receiving the intake from 211 and having a discussion with the client.

Provides curb-to-curb transportation to riders whose disability prevents them from riding the fixed route bus system.
Provides curb-to-curb (and if needed, door-to-door) transportation to riders whose disability prevents them from riding the fixed route bus system. Paratransit service is designed to be equal to the fixed route service. Paratransit’s service area and hours of operation mirror those of the fixed routes. Riders often share their rides with others to meet demand.
Paratransit can be used for any trip purpose, other than a medical emergency Examples include to get to work or school, to visit friends and family, to go shopping, or to church, to see movies, enjoy parks and trails and keep medical or dental appointments.
Wheelchair equipped vehicles with curb-to-curb service are provided to most populated areas of Whatcom County. Service to remote areas may be limited. Evening service operates in a more limited area, corresponding to fixed route bus service.

Provides charitable, need-based commercial airline assistance for patients and one medically-necessary escort.
The patient must:
- Be able to sit on their own once they are in the seat.
- Require little or no medical attention.
- Be able to transfer out of their wheelchair into their seat on the aircraft with little or no assistance (they cannot have someone literally pick them up and sit them in the seat).
- If the patient requires oxygen, some airlines may provide it during the flight. Otherwise, the patient must have a portable oxygen concentrator (POC) approved by the FAA or the airlines. Commercial airlines require no less than 48 hours advance notice to prepare for the equipment needed. The patient is responsible for making these arrangements and paying any travel fees associated with the oxygen.

Patients are provided with gas cards, or commercial bus or Amtrak tickets to medically related treatment. These trips are for non-local medical care more than 50 miles away. Gas cards are also available for multiple trips to local treatment.

Para-Transit is a wheelchair-accessable transportation service for individuals whose disability prevents them frim using the regular fixed route buses. This means that a person must be unable, because of disability, to get to or from the bus stop, get on or off a lift or ramp equipped bus, or successfully travel by bus or form the destination. Para-Transit is available to anyone in our community that is elderly or low income that can't afford transportation to medical, dental, or social service appointments.
